See you next year, I can't wait!

Group Planning Meeting - January 2011

Just a quickie heads up to those interested in coming along to the Teignbridge and Torbay planning meeting.

We are meeting in Paignton on Monday January 17th to discuss meet-ups for 2011.  Ideally we would like everyone to come up with 1 paid for activity, and 3 free things to do/places to go.   We thought that if we could arrange a paid for activity every 6 weeks or so, it would spread the cost and be more affordable for all.

So get your thinking caps on :)  Ideally things should be within the Teignbridge and Torbay region, and ideas from the young people of the group are always welcome.  It would be great if activities suited all ages (difficult I know), and please bear in mind that some families rely on public transport, so where possible we try to cater for them too :)

For exact locations details, please contact me at Julia@classroomfree.co.uk or speak to Elaine.

Last minute change of plans :)  Due to some families being unable to make the visit to Brixham tomorrow, and the severe cold conditions weather wise, we have decided to postpone the group meeting and will re-organise for another time.
Sorry for the inconvenience people.

Festive Decoration Art Workshop

Sarah has kindly offered to host Art workshops on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month (Excluding December as it's obviously a hectic time for everyone).

Art Workshop 2:
Festive Decoration (Felt Making)
Part 1: Thursday 11th November 1.30pm - 3.30pm.
Part 2: Thursday 25th November 1.30pm - 3.30pm.
Please make sure you are free to attend both dates.

To book your place, please contact Sarah directly at: sarahathomas71@gmail.com

Please also read the information below:

Each workshop will be in two parts - you have to be able to attend both sessions to complete the project. Numbers are limited to 5 families, and Sarah needs to know in advance of numbers so she can prepare.

The workshops are for families to work together - not for children to be 'left to it'. Parent/Guardian supervision and assistance will be required.

Cost £7.00 per family for each project (two sessions) which includes the majority of equipment needed - a list of any extras needed (such as newspaper or aprons etc) will be supplied to those taking part.

Please note that there is 1 friendly hairy (not fur) dog at Sarah's house. Please keep this in mind if you or your children are allergic to animals or dog phobic.

There will be some required 'work' to be done at home between the sessions. Sarah insists it will be fun!

Please wear old clothes and take along an Apron and a container to transport wet art work home in.

*Note*
This is an Art Workshop only. Those attending will be expected to join in with the workshop, it is not a social group meeting.

Civil War / Stuart History Day - Exeter.

I've just been given details of a Civil War / Stuart History Day that is being organised jointly by the Devon Home Ed group and East Devon group:

It will be an educational day run by a couple who do "living history" workshops for children, based on the Civil War/Stuart period of UK history.

This will be March/April next year (date to be finalised) on a Tuesday in Exeter (sorry, Tuesday is the only day the venue is bookable for most of the day).

Activities would be things like: Quill writing, trying on costumes, braid and cord making, sword fighting/weaponry, medicines, plant walk. Everything is meant to give the children a taste of how things were one during that time period (1600-1650ish).

Cost will be dependent on how many children come (the more children, the cheaper it will be).

If anyone is interested, send me an email to Julia@classroomfree.co.uk and I'll pass it on to the organiser. They need to know how many children over 5 will be attending - under 5's are welcome, but the activities are for 5 years +.

Group Planning Meeting Round Up...

I just thought I would provide a quick round-up of ideas and suggestions that were brought up at the group planning meeting on Monday.  I won't go into too many details as nothing has been finalised, but here is a quick list to give you a general gist of how things went...

Paid Trips suggested by children and adults included (there may be some I've forgotten...)

  • A Victorian Dress Up Workshop.
  • Bygones.
  • Torquay Museum.
  • @Bristol.
  • Torquay's Dinosaur World.
  • Bushcraft and/or Arts and Crafts at a nearby outdoor 'school'.
  • Swimming.
  • Torre Abbey.
  • Pennywell Farm.
  • Prickly Ball Farm.
  • Woodlands.
  • Crealy.
  • House of Marbles.
  • Make a pizza at Pizza Express.
Free outings for group get-togethers suggested included (amongst others):
  • Cockington.
  • Staverton.
  • Stover Park.
  • Decoy Park.
  • Occombe Farm
  • Home-Meets
The possibility of having Art workshops twice a month was mentioned - this is to be arranged.
We thought that having no more than one paid for outing a month was suitable due to the financial situation of many families - this isn't set in stone, so once a month or once every two months depending on availability.

We are in talks with various clubs and charities in the area to see what they can offer us as a group, as well as the possibility of organising science, craft and cookery days.

If anyone has any queries or suggestions, please let me know:  Julia@classroomfree.co.uk

Monthly *All Groups Together* Meeting - Exeter

Just to let you know that Lou has come up with the idea of having a monthly "group get-together" in Exeter.

There is an outside space for play / picnic, as well as an indoor space for arts & crafts, or whatever is decided as time goes by.

The meeting is open to all, and we hope it will bring all the groups and therefore Devon home-educators together.

The first meeting is Tuesday 5th October.  Contact me for more details.

Monday's Planning Meeting...

Message from Elaine...

Hi Everyone, If you are not able to make it on Monday to the group planning meeting, would you be able to email to let us know what your children have requested/suggested?  Please don't feel you have to be polite and go along with what everyone else wants to do, it really does make it easier if everyone throws their ideas into the pot or we end up with a lot of very polite mums but nowhere to go lol !

Thanks, hope everyone can make the Not Back to School Picnic/BBQ tomorrow xx

*note from Julia*
If you email me your ideas at Julia@classroomfree.co.uk - I'll pass it on to those that need to know :)

Freedom in Education Day...

Did you know that tomorrow is Freedom in Education Day?

There will be a small (but perfectly formed) gathering in Totnes tomorrow, with lots of info about home-education and the local groups.  I'm hoping to be there for at least part of the time.

Get in touch for more information regarding location and time, it would be lovely to see you there.

Confusion - Just to clarify...

There appears to be a bit of confusion regarding a new group being set up in the area.

I would like to clarify that the Teignbridge and Torbay group is still existing, in
the same format, with social meetings and educational visits around Teignbridge and Torbay.

I am still the contact person and one of the organisers.  Nothing has changed, there have been no fall-outs, no problems, no issues.  The only new addition we have is the newletter which Sarah is emailing to group members to ensure everyone gets an invite to meetings and knows what's going on.

It seems that someone else has decided to set up a very similar group, with a
very similar name - the Teignbridge and Torbay group are nothing to do with this new one.

Sorry for the confusion, I'm probably as puzzled about it as you are :)

Occombe Farm Meeting

Wow, what a fabulous day it was today, even the weather was kind to us.  There was a pretty good turnout, with 11 families joining us for our Occombe Farm meet-up.  11 families = 16 adults and 23 children = busy but very fun.  The children ranged in ages from 2 through to 15 years.

We met at the play area and the children ran around with friends whilst the adults either joined in or acquainted themselves with who was who. Once everyone had arrived we wandered off for a woodland walk. We were greeted by these handsome chaps along the way...

Watching...

We followed winding paths...

Woodland Walk

admired trees...

and generally enjoyed fresh air, exercise, and a jolly good natter!

The group split at one point - some choosing to go the shorter route back to the picnic spot, whilst others ventured forth feeling fit and able to tackle the longer trail. We all met up back at the play area for a picnic lunch.

Group Meeting

The afternoon was spent doing various things by various families. Some wandered off to visit the shop and barn areas of the farm, some stayed at the park and chatted with friends, some went off to the organic garden area where you could see delights such as these...

All in all it was a lovely day. Relaxed, care-free, cheap, and fun :)

Thanks to everyone that managed to join us, it was great seeing you all.

Cockington Visit and Picnic

We have just returned home from a lovely day out to Cockington Village, in Torquay.  A group of home-educating families got together for a wander around the park and a picnic.  We had a look at the craft studios, which included glass blowing and blacksmith demonstrations, a walk around the organic garden, then finished the day sitting at the playpark where the children could just roam around and play.

The weather was very kind to us - only providing us with a couple of downpours in the morning which didn't matter as there were plenty of trees to shelter under.  For much of the afternoon we were basking in sunshine.

For those that don't know, for one week every year, Film Education offer free viewings of selected films to schools and home-educators.

This year it's running from 14-22 October in England, Wales and N. Ireland.
and 28 October-5 November in Scotland

Just click on the link below to go to the website, click on primary or secondary, and click on the cinema of choice from the drop down menu to view the films and their resources.

Simples!

I've chosen to go to two - just put home-educator as the school name.

Welcome!

Thanks for visiting the new Teignbridge and Torbay Home-Educators website.

By creating the site we hope that people will be fully informed about what's available within the area for home-educators, including visits, group meetings, local events, and just general gossip :)

For obvious reasons we are unable to broadcast the exact details of the things we plan before we go, but we will offer basic outline information on here, and the rest will be available via email or telephone as usual.  If you need my phone number, please email me at Julia@classroomfree.co.uk.
